The warm and sunny weather and May has brought lots of progress on our various projects and initiatives. So let us tell you what’s going on, and what is soon to start.
In an attempt to improve the health of our wild flower bank, we have killed the weeds in one half. If this proves successful we may do the same next year to the other half. The hope is if we can keep back the weeds, the wild flowers we’re planting will have a chance to flourish.
We have wonderful news regarding our Lawn Mower fundraising campaign. Through a combination of donations and grants we have achieved our target and will soon be ordering the new mower. Thank you to everyone who contributed, in particular Wonston Parish Council who provided half the funds necessary. This is a long term investment into the future of the Gratton to ensure its enduring value as a recreational green space for our local community.
This week you may have seen scaffolding appear on the Gratton Pavilion. This is in preparation for the installation of solar panels on the roof. This investment should reduce our reliance on the National Grid, reduce ongoing costs in the long term, and contribute to the country’s climate change objectives.
While the scaffolding is in place, we ask all visitors to take care if passing by or using the pavilion.
Another project that will shortly begin is the repair and replacement of the perimeter path. As visitors to the Gratton will have seen, over the last few years, grass has progressively crept in towards the centre of the path. This has proved very difficult to stop or even slow down. It is hoped that investment in a new path will provide a more resilient surface for people to enjoy.
This is a big investment in the Gratton that could not have happened so quickly if it were not for Wonston Parish Council who have provided the funding.
We are grateful for everyone’s patience while the repair work is done. We anticipate 5 days effort, during which time the path may not be usable.
